5th graders celebrate Black History Month
For the past few weeks, 5th grade students have been researching influential black men and women to honor during Black History Month. These men and women could be from our past or present, and could be famous or local, but had to have some lasting impact and influence on the student. Students turned their research into speeches and presented these speeches to their classmates, parents, and honored guests Tuesday evening, February 28th in the Hearn Library. There was an impressive turnout of guests, and the students absolutely captivated the audience with their speeches and public speaking skills! To go along with the speeches, students are also working on a collaborative quilt project with all 5th grade teachers, in which they are creating individual quilt squares honoring the person in their speech. Students researched, wrote and edited their speeches within their reading and writing classes, determined area, fabric quantities, and measured individual quilt squares in their math class, and discussed symbols to represent their honoree in their social studies class. Students will choose two symbols that appropriately represent the person in their speech, and all squares will be sewn together in a quilt that will hang in Hearn’s library for years to come. Students’ speeches will be published in a hard-bound book that students can purchase, and a copy will be located near the quilt so that anyone wishing to learn more about the symbols and people on the quilt can do so.
