Elkhorn Middle School Jump Start gives 6th graders a... well, a JUMP START!

Happening this week at Elkhorn Middle School (EMS)...

Nearly 200 incoming 6th graders are participating in a voluntary "Jump Start" program to help them become familiar with the school before their first day of middle school. All Franklin County Schools will resume classes on Wednesday, Aug 15.

To ease the transition from elementary to middle school, the students are visiting EMS each morning this week. They are participating in a number of sessions, meeting some teachers, walking the halls, and learning about life as a middle schooler.

The students have been assigned lockers and have practiced opening them, they have received their class schedules and walked from class to class to familiarize themselves with the new (for most) concept of changing classrooms every period, and they have participated in team-building exercises to make new friends and reinforce what they know about working together and being teammates.

Because each student will be assigned a Chromebook computer, they also are learning about Internet safety and how to use and care for a Chromebook.

This morning they heard from Capt. Ken Hopkins of the Frankfort Police Department, who discussed bullying and the dangers of social media.

On Friday the students will perform a song for parents and guardians and showcase some of the things they’ve learned during the week.

EMS Principal Jeff Rhode said, “This school probably looks huge to most of these students. The more familiar they are with the building before school starts, the less intimidated they’ll be and the easier it will be for them to settle in. That’s the goal of this program.”
